Farah was sitting in the kitchen going over the party list with her mother. The exams were over and Farah wanted to invite her friends for a party.

“Mother, you know I am now a part of Purple Girls Club and we have some rules about people we can be friends with,” Farah answered.

People who like travelling have their reasons. They believe that travelling can help them expand their field of view, especially in the geographical and historical sense. They also think that touring will give them more chances to enjoy different kinds of food and experience new things that would never be brought by other activities. But those who dislike travelling also have some reasons.
Travelling, in my opinion, does more good than harm. Most importantly, it broadens our mind. We can get in touch with other civilizations, cultures, customs and ideas.
Through history, most people travelled because of necessity --- not for pleasure. People travelled just in order to remain alive. They searched for food to eat or places to live in. They sometimes ran away from enemies. This is not to say that no one ever travelled just for the fun of it. In ancient times, for example, rich Romans travelled all the way to Greece to take part in the Olympic Games, and festivals. Of course, some people decided to travel just out of curiosity(好奇心). They wanted to find out what it looked like beyond the horizon (地平線). Also business travel has been going on for centuries. Traders could not only make money but also learn to speak several languages and be introduced to different cultures.
So, travelling does enrich our mind and draw new ideas to us. There is no doubt that we can get much from it.

55. What’s the main point of this passage?
A. People have different reasons for travelling.
B. Travelling enriches our mind.
C. There are a number of ways to enjoy ourselves while travelling.
D. People have different opinions about travelling.

After the violent earthquake that shook Los Angeles in 1994, earthquake scientists had good news to report: The damage and death toll (死亡人數(shù))could have been much worse. More than 60 people died in this earthquake. By comparison, as earthquake of similar intensity that shook America in 1988 claimed 25,000 deaths. Injuries and deaths were relatively less in Los Angeles because the quake occurred at 4:31 a.m. on a holiday, when traffic was light on the city’s highways. In addition, changes made to the construction codes(規(guī)章) in Los Angeles during the last 20 years have strengthened the city’s buildings and highways, making them more resistant to quakes.
Despite the good news, civil engineers aren’t resting on their successes. Pinned to their drawing boards are blueprints (藍圖)for improved quake- resistant buildings. The new designs should offer even greater security to cities where earthquakes often take place. In the past, making structures quake-resistant meant firm yet flexible materials, such as steel and wood that bend without breaking, to make buildings more resistant to earthquakes. The new design, however, would install computers in the buildings and the computers would help the building adjust(調節(jié)) itself during the earthquake. Such buildings would be called smart buildings and could be very expensive to build. However, they would save many lives and would be less likely to be damaged during an earthquake.
56. About __________ less people lost their lives in the earthquake that shook Los Angeles in 1994 than in the earthquake that occurred in America in 1988.
A.2,440B. 25,000C. 24,940D. 60
57. The injuries and deaths were relatively less in Los Angeles thanks to the following reasons EXCEPT that _______________.
A. The quake occurred at 4:30 a.m. on a holiday.
B. Traffic was light on the city’s highway at that time.
C. The city’s buildings and highways have been strengthened.
D. A new design has been put into use.
58. Which of the following statement is NOT TRUE?
A. All traditional buildings will break down in earthquakes.
B. People changed the construction methods to strengthen the buildings in Los Angeles.
C. Engineers are still trying to provide greater security to buildings.
D. The smart building may adjust itself during the earthquake.
59. The underlined word “resistant” most probably means _____________.
A. attractiveB. not hit byC. forgotten byD. not destroyed by
60. The writer’s purpose in writing this passage is to ______________.
A. report new development in constructing buildings
B. encourage engineers to make more use of computer
